Oman Cement wants to boost its cement grinding capacity to meet increased demand which has been spurred by the recent boom in infrastructure projects in the country.

Dr Abdullah Abbas Ahmed, chairman Oman Cement, said in a statement, “The expansion is the latest in a series of upgrades undertaken by Oman Cement in recent years. Earlier this year, the company commissioned the second phase of the expansion of its third clinker production line, boosting clinker production capacity by 4,000 tonnes per day. Following the commercial launch of the new kiln, which produced 191,840 metric tonnes (MT) of clinker during the first half of this year, the company has ceased imports of clinker.”

"The demand for cement continues to be good in view of government spending on infrastructure projects.”

The country’s construction sector has been boosted by commercial, residential and infrastructure projects, including Oman's new five-year spending plan (2011-2015), which foresees $78bn invested in hospitals, education and roads.

Oman also recently announced that $8bn will be spent on property developments including hotels, a shopping mall and a convention centre.

The country’s largest property development, the $3bn Wave Muscat is also on track, say developers.
